About Paper and Pencils, Inc.
Our mission is to provide school supplies and other materials needed to
support learning, to disadvantaged children and schools in the
Mississippi Delta and other impoverished regions of the US.
Paper and Pencils, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, came into being
when our Founder and Director, Mary Ann Hillier, watched a Sundance
Film Festival documentary winner, "LaLee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton." In
an heart breaking scene, one of the Wallace children, Grannie, cries
because she can't go to school not having a pencil or paper. Her
grandmother, LaLee Wallace, stands out side her trailer talking with
neighbors trying to find someone who has paper and pencil to spare. Ms.
Hillier was so troubled by the thought of a child missing school for lack of
such basic materials she decided something had to be done to help. That
something became Paper and Pencils, Inc.
Since October 2002 Paper & Pencils, Inc., has worked with individuals,
religious organizations, schools and the business community to create
and host community service projects and fund raisers, to educate young
people to the plight of less fortunate children, and raise funds to purchase
and/or collect donations of school supplies and educational materials to
send to children and schools in the Mississippi Delta.
Through the generosity of F/friends and the Maryland Business
Community, we have sent thousands of pounds of school supplies,
books, musical instruments, teacher instructional materials, games, and
even baseballs and baseball gloves to the children.
We are young nonprofit and there is still much to do. The need in the Delta
is so great, and there are many other areas in the US where children do
not have the basic tools needed to help them achieve academically. And
education is still the best weapon we have to break the cycle of poverty.
